Presented in collaboration with Screen South, Living Words and Normal? Festival of the Brain

Please join us for an artist talk by Italian artist Flaminia Celata, which will mark the beginning of her artist residency with Screen South during June. She will be working together with people from Folkestone and the surrounding area to develop an exciting project on neuroplasticity and gender: The Boundaries Are Eminently Porous.

For the talk, Flaminia Celata will give a short presentation of her recent projects: IO sono memoria (I am memory), about the human memory functions and memory loss, and APUA, a collaborative project, with the German artist Bärbel Praun, about the Carrara marble quarries in Norther Italy (recently prominently featured in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist).

About the residency:
Over a month, through a series of workshops called The Plastic Lab, Flaminia will explore the theme of neuroplasticity together with people from the LBGTQIA+ community who have ‘come out’ later in life. During the residency Flaminia will also work with a group of older people, including people with lived experience of dementia and their carers, for a workshop series called The Memory Palace. The residency will culminate in a showcase on 27 June.

All are welcome to attend the talk. There will be an opportunity for a drink and informal conversation following the presentation.

The event is free to attend but please book with the link above

About the artist:

Flaminia Celata is a visual artist based in Rome. She mainly works on long term projects, using photography and video. She has recently adopted a more transdisciplinary approach to research, encompassing sculpture and performance.

Flaminia’s practice involves a long and intense analytical research process. She describes her work as arising from a curiosity that becomes obsessive over time; curiosity about an event or topic that she generally has experience of.
